Tour of Majella Hermitages

Majella, whose people still nowadays, refer to her as “the Mountain Mother”, stores historical records of great value left by the religious sentiment of its inhabitants that lived in its valleys and uplands. From the Stone Age to the Modern age the Majella was considered “Sacred” and as an embracing mother to whom the peoples’ faith and hopes were addressed in intimate prayer and therefore, many of its old caves became places of worship, churches were built on cliffs and cave engravings were carved into the rock. The Hermitage Tour will be guided by a Medieval Art historian and will introduce you to one of the most popular expressions of the Majella’s ancient spirituality.
